French

Bonjour and welcome to our Modern Foreign Languages page. My name is Mrs Gregory and I am MFL Lead at Hunts Cross. Here you will find information on how we teach and learn French, useful links, learning overviews and our policy.

Statement of Intent

At Hunts Cross we have chosen French as our Modern Foreign Language. We believe learning a language enriches the curriculum. It provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enhance the overall teaching and learning experience.

Our aim is to capitalise on the ability of young pupils to rapidly acquire passive and active knowledge of another language and to broaden their cultural awareness. We strive to foster positive attitudes to language learning, speakers of other languages and other cultures.

Implementation

Pupils are encouraged to become confident language learners who enjoy languages, who can express their thoughts and ideas in another language and can understand and respond to its speakers both in speech and writing. We use French language in the lessons as much as possible and throughout the wider school day.

We deliver the curriculum for primary languages using the support of School Improvement Liverpool’s MFL team and are able to have a French Language Teacher assist in our teaching of French lessons weekly. Lessons are always interactive and consist of songs, games, repetition, reading and writing and are always lots of fun. Teaching in French will include whole class teaching, cooperative group work and individual work. Good quality resources and use of ICT are used to enhance learning.

All pupils are equally valued, including those who need extra support for a range of educational needs and more able pupils. Every opportunity is taken to enable pupils to progress according to their abilities.

Where possible and relevant, we aim to embed the language into the main primary curriculum.

Impact

We intend that that impact of the teaching and learning of MFL at Hunts Cross Primary School ensures children make progress and attain in-line with or better than national expectations. We strive to provide support for those working towards the expected standard and opportunities for children to achieve the greater depth standard.

Progress is evidenced through photographs, video clips and work in exercise books. Further information is gathered through the use of displays, learning walks and pupil questionnaires which highlight strengths and any improvements that still need to be embedded.

Children in Key Stage 2 are assessed within the National Curriculum standards and this is reported to parents in the end of year report. Teachers make formative assessments against key objectives taken from both the SiL scheme and the National Curriculum document and they use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately.

Our MFL curriculum contributes to children’s personal development in knowledge of the wider world, tolerance, perseverance and listening skills.
