We use lots of different ways to teach children to read.
Phonics - Children have a daily phonic lesson from reception to Year 3.
Shared reading - Teachers and children enjoy books together. The teacher will model how to read, decode words and check that the children understand the text.
Guided reading - children work in groups of six to read a variety of texts. There is a particular focus to the reading. The focus will be the child's next steps.
Individual reading. _ In Hunts Cross the teachers hear the children read individually. If needed children may be heard up to five times per week.
Reading for Pleasure
We encourage reading for pleasure as the children visit the library once per week. We have just started our book borrowing service, where parents and children can borrow books to read at home and return them when they have finished. All our books have been donated by parents.
We also encourage our children to use an online reading scheme called 'Bug Club.' This reading programme is full of engaging books that excite the most reluctant reader. It also allows the children's reading and understanding to be assessed in a child friendly way.
